Hamshya Rajkumar: Emerging Artist Residency (2019)
GSA graduate Hamshya Rajkumar developed the concept of Embracing Play for her 2019-20 residency. Her approach to socially engaged practice involved a whisper-light touch where boundaries between organised and spontaneous events collapsed. An intriguing, yet carefully designed, call in the local paper invited people to rendezvous in Skeoch woods to embrace play. A series of games, responses and exploration awaited those who joined.
Interested in subtle interventions, which may lead to chance encounters, spontaneous self-organisation and adults remembering the joys of outdoor play, Hamshya reflected that as an emerging artist she had found the residency “incredibly successful and insightful” in her development of a socially engaged practice.
