Sustainability

Making positive changes across all our activities to support and protect our environment

We believe it is our collective responsibility to change how we live, work, and play in order to support and protect our environment.

In 2023, we undertook a carbon audit to fully understand the impact of the Mount Stuart Trust and have developed an action plan to achieve government targets, if not sooner.

Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles have been introduced for the self-catering, maintenance and property teams with charging points at the car park at Mount Stuart House.

Biomass Plant

Approximately 80% of Mount Stuart House is run off a biomass boiler with woodchip sourced sustainably from our woodland on the Isle of Bute. There are four further boilers supporting three self-catering houses and four residential properties at Ambrismore.

Hydro Scheme

On the hill above Colintraive is a hydro scheme producing 1 million KWh of power annually. This is the equivalent of powering over 1,000 houses for a year.

Passive Houses

In 2022, we completed ten Passive Houses at Lochend, a development that focussed on sustainability both for the environment and for the financial benefit of those living in and running these homes. Lochend has provided affordable modern housing to ten families who are now active members of our island community.

Green Tourism

In 2024, we are awaiting grading for the Green Tourism accreditation.

Green Tourism is a world-leading sustainability certification for travel, tourism and hospitality businesses which aims to help embed responsible, sustainable and environmentally friendly practices across businesses and the wider tourism sector.

As part of the Mount Stuart Trust's Strategy, we are committed to attaining Gold accreditation by 2028.
