Witty and Sophisticated: Allan Ramsay’s Portraits of Women, April Talk & Supper Club

Join art historian and Mount Stuart Guide, Jana Jankuliaková, for an evening delving into stories behind fascinating portraits of women by the Scottish Enlightenment artist Allan Ramsay.
The Scottish artist Allan Ramsay (1713-1784) was one of the most significant portrait painters of 18th century Britain. He was particularly renowned for his portraits of women, in which they are captured as intellectual and sophisticated individuals with a strong presence. The portraits reflect not only the sitters’ physical and psychological likeness, but also Ramsay’s curiosity and respect for the women he painted. The Bute Collection at Mount Stuart houses an impressive collection of Ramsay’s portraits. This gives us a chance to look deeper into his unique stylistic and painting techniques that distinguished him as a highly sought-after portraitist in the intellectual, cultural and political circles of the time.
