WWI & WWII Commemorative Talks
Join this online talk with Ingrid Thomson, Mount Stuart's Lynsey Nairn, Keren Guthrie, and Kenneth Whyte, to share fascinating stories of how the Great Wars impacted Scottish estate houses.
Held at John Sinclair House in Edinburgh, Historic Environment Scotland presents these WWI & WWII Commemorative Talks starting at 2pm, focusing on how the Great Wars impacted Scottish estate houses.
Mount Stuart's Archivist, Lynsey Nairn will share the story of how Mount Stuart became an important Naval Hospital through this time.
On the outbreak of WWI, the 4th Marquess and Marchioness of Bute opened up their home on the Isle of Bute as facilities for a Naval Hospital. Over 2000 patients passed through its doors over the course of the War with the Bute family continuing to reside in the house. An Entertainment Committee was formed and produced pantomimes, plays, and concerts, and their head surgeon, Sir William MacEwen, was born on Bute. This presentation will be illustrated through original photos and documents from the archive of the Bute Collection at Mount Stuart.
